How to prepare for a move: how to tidy up and eliminate the superfluous

Do you have to move and don’t know how to do it? Follow our directions for a stress-free operation

1. Get rid of the superfluous

Moving house is also the best time to get rid of everything you no longer use. Right away, before moving house. Many are tempted to postpone this operation until they arrive at their new home, but this is a mistake: you waste twice as much time packing things up and then taking them out; unnecessarily increases the boxes to be transported and, consequently, the cost of the service. Without then considering the psychological impact of a new beginning without unnecessary burdens.

When preparing the boxes, evaluate when was the last time you used that object: whether it’s a set of dishes or an item of clothing, it doesn’t matter much. Also, get rid of everything that feels most in tune with you. Only keep items you truly care about.

The decluttering activity, among other things, does not mean having to throw things away: if they are in good condition, you can also sell them or donate them to charity.

2. Divide the boxes by environments

Be careful when packing boxes. It may seem like a lot of work, but it will help you find things again without going crazy. When you prepare the boxes, don’t do it randomly but divide things primarily into rooms. And then do it also by type: winter clothes must be separated from summer ones, dishes from cutlery, school books from fiction books. It is also convenient that if several people live in the house, each of them has their own things separated from those of the others.

3. Make a list

You’ve been careful to divide everything as best as possible, but now you know where to go to look for things? The secret is to make a list when packing what’s inside each carton. An activity that takes time, but which will allow you not to go crazy in research.

4. Be careful with fragile items

Glasses, plates, cups, mirrors. The most fragile objects require to be wrapped with the necessary precautions to arrive at their destination safe and sound. Tissue paper, newspaper, bubble wrap, polystyrene chips, two-wave cardboard box will be your valuable helpers in this operation. For the correct packaging, you can also ask the chosen haulage company for advice. Once packed, don’t forget to put the fragile label on these boxes!

5. Furniture and precious objects

Particular care and attention must also be paid in the case of furniture and precious objects. In this case, in addition to taking care of the packaging, it is also advisable to make a specific list and take photos of the various objects so as to be able to testify, if necessary, their state before the move.

6. Box wisely

When preparing the move, start packing with what you rarely use and leave everyday things for last.

7. The house plant as a friend

Make a floor plan of the house indicating the intended use of the rooms. In this way the movers will be able to place the boxes where you need them as you indicated on them, saving you a lot of work.

8. Clean the new house before moving

Moving into a clean house will not only give you a better feeling, but it will also save you the hassle of having to clean up with cluttered boxes and furniture lying around.
